Matthew Tirrell, Deputy Director of Science of Argonne National Laboratory and Pritzker Director of the Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME), will be answering your questions during a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Monday, January 18, at 10:30 a.m.
Join us online to ask your questions. Please follow Argonne social media for details.
Tirrell will answer such questions as: What is molecular engineering? How can it be translated into technologies in order to solve major global challenges? What types of scientific disciplines can take part? What are prospects for students? This is your chance to find out!
About the Institute for Molecular Engineering
Problem-based and collaborative, the Institute for Molecular Engineering (IME) focuses on molecular-level science at the cross-section of science and engineering to directly address societal problems. It represents an extraordinary opportunity to engage the pressing problems of our time, leveraging the strengths of the University of Chicago and Argonne in basic sciences and shedding constraints of traditional boundaries between engineering disciplines.
About Matthew Tirrell
Matthew Tirrell, who joined IME from the University of California, Berkeley, is a pioneering researcher in biomolecular engineering and nanotechnology, specializing in the manipulation and measurement of the surface properties of polymers – materials that consist of long, flexible chain molecules. “We’re trying to create an environment where people aren’t so focused on what the disciplines are, but what the disciplines can do,” said Tirrell.

About Reddit
Reddit is an entertainment, social networking and news website where registered members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links, making it essentially an online bulletin board system. “AMAs” (for “Ask Me Anything”) sessions are open to all Reddit users, and use the site’s comment system for both questions and answers; it is similar to a press conference, but online. President Obama, Louis C.K. Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Argonne’s own George Crabtree and Jeff Chamberlain have participated.
